....just getting started

First off, I will start by saying that I am not a writer. I love to read, but writing is definitely not my forte. With that said, being a high school librarian has opened my eyes to many different views and perspectives that I didn't have before. Towards the end of the school year, I encountered situations that I needed to reflect and assess. I am happy that I have a few days of summer to ponder and consider how a librarian, like myself, can remedy said situations.

I have attended many conferences this past year, to which I have observed that many districts are fortunate to have a Library Director or District Librarian to liaise between campus librarians and district administration. In my current district, the librarians are under the direction of someone that is housed at our administration building, however, this person is not a librarian and clearly does not know what all is entailed with our positions as campus librarians.

A few reoccurring question I have:
  • How do we advocate for our spaces if the person who is 'over' us clearly does not have a clue as to what we do?
  • How do we convey the message that not all campus libraries are the same?
  • What do we, as campus librarians, need to do to request that a District Librarian position be considered in the future?
Of course, I ask myself far more questions than that, but those are the pressing issues that come to mind. So for those of you who have kindly taken a few minutes out of your day to read my initial blog post, please comment below to let me, and possibly others, know what needs to be done to bridge the gap between campuses and our district administration.
